Awethology Dark

Extract from D.M. Cain’s piece in this anthology, entitled ‘The End’:

How do you convince people you’re not crazy when the world around you is insane and you’re the only one who can see the truth? These stupid people are walking to their deaths, every single one of them. They don’t even know it and no matter how much I scream it at them, they won’t listen. I wave my sign backwards and forwards in front of their faces but they back away from me, their eyes wide and afraid as if I’m threatening them, rather than trying to save their skins. So I shout louder and soldier on pointlessly, knowing that I must do something. Knowing that I am the only one who can save them when the end comes. Because it is coming, and it’s coming soon.

My name is Wayne Dixon. I’m fifty-seven years old and I’ve been chosen to save the world.

Bio

Headshot

Born in a small Kansas town on the Missouri river, I grew up in a house of avid readers and overflowing bookshelves. When I was sixteen I wrote my first, full-length novel on a typewriter in my parent’s living room. My main focus is adult epic fantasy, but I also write urban fantasy, and the occasional science fiction or post-apocalyptic story.
I am proud to be a self-published author and a member of the #indiebooksbeseen community. My goal as a writer is to stir emotion and make the reader feel, whether it be good or bad. I believe in writing fearless, and that telling a story as it is meant to be told, is far more important than word count.

You may ask yourself why I would give my book away. The main reason is that I LIKE the story. I think it’s a good book; an exciting and compelling mystery/thriller. I believe readers will enjoy it. Why I’m doing a #BookGiveaway (Psst. There are actually 2)

Sunshine's avatarSunshine Somerville

free-booksHere’s something the average reader may not know:  Most authors at some point think making our ebooks free seems like a good idea.  Once it’s free, we see a spike of downloads — “Look at my ranking! This is amazing!” …And then we don’t see much after that.  But we keep trying, because it’s a good way to get our books “out there” and maybe build up our audience.  And, quite frankly, everyone else is doing it so we feel like we have to or else we’ll get lost in the shuffle.

Unfortunately, ebook consumers are “trained” to look for freebies — “why pay $0.99 for a book that might be a dud when I can get this other one for free?”  But a lot of free ebooks get lost to the sad end of a rotating Kindle carousel, never to be looked at again.  Admit it, we all have them (I’m including…

Indie Success –10 things that really matter

Hans Christian Andersen by Anne Grahame Johnstone Hans Christian Andersen by Anne Grahame Johnstone

There are a lot of articles and reports out there giving various and often conflicting figures about the Indie book market. All seem to agree, however, that the percentage of Indie writers and publishers is huge and growing. You only have to read a few Indie books to realise there is some seriously good stuff out there and marvel at the ingenuity and diversity of the imaginations from which they were born.

Yet there is still a stigma attached to independently published work. There are those, it is true, who see it only as a way to make a fast buck and churn out little more than rubbish. These are not writers in my opinion and it is not of their books I speak, they are little more than opportunists; marketeers who, seeing a potentially lucrative product churn out a cheap imitation that…

Simplifying the Author Sprawl

A remarkably astute observation about author life by Sunshine Somerville

Sunshine's avatarSunshine Somerville

These past few weeks, I’ve been making a lot of lists.  On Twitter, on Facebook, on blog favorite folders, etc., etc.  I’ve been doing this not only because I have some OCD tendencies but also because of this – my author-based collection/database has become paralyzingly vast and in some ways useless.

I’ve been at this author thing for a while now.  Certainly long enough to know what groups, blogs, clubs, and advertising sites work for me and which do not.  In the past few weeks (and probably in the next weeks I’ll sift through more), I’ve finally let myself sever ties with those that are sucking up my time, cluttering my inbox, and in general just aren’t doing me any good.

Some of these sites/clubs I’ve been with long enough to see that our philosophies differ by way of author-to-author support, review policies, etc.  I don’t want to badmouth anyone in…
