The Sins of Silas is the third full-length book in The Light and Shadow Chronicles. This full-length novel explores the effects of the ongoing war on a nihilistic young man not blessed with immortality, despite his privileged position in the Brotherhood of Shadow.

Book Blurb:

Poverty is rife on the streets of Belkeep. An ancient conflict with the Children of Light saps the country’s resources.

Silas Wilder may have been born into the royal family, but he has no interest in their eternal war. Silas is more concerned with the issues at home: homelessness, disease and poverty ravage the city while those in charge spend their time planning battles in faraway lands. A rising star on the streets, Silas is known as the ‘Champion of the Slums’, striving to provide a decent life, and a purpose, for those who have none.

As with all those born into the eternal war, he cannot escape his destiny for long. After a chance encounter with a mysterious figure points him towards an ancient text, Silas finds himself dragged into a role he is tragically underprepared for. Now, it’s up to him to rise to the occasion and claim his true position in life – or perish.

Praise for The Sins of Silas:

***** Having had the honor and privilege of proofreading D.M. ‘s work on Silas I can tell anyone who picks up the book (and a warning), you won’t want to put the book down. As I proofread the book I couldn’t wait for the next section! I wanted to know how the story went and I hope Silas returns in another book soon!!

Author of Omega Plague, David M. Tipton

***** A story about an underdog wanting to do the right thing for his family and people. A tale of family dynamics , friendship and heroism . I couldn’t put it down.

Author of New Year, Newish Me, Macy Milldale

***** I do not give out many 5’s these days,  but this is an exception! DM does a wonderful job getting us into the story and keeping us there! Well done! Looking for more from DM!

Epic fantasy as a genre

New novel after 5 years!

It’s been a whole 5 years since I released the last book in my Light and Shadow Chronicles series – Origin of Shadow.

Things have been crazy since then – a divorce, 2 house moves, two mental breakdowns, a new job, an engagement, five cats (!) and all on top of a global pandemic and increasing economic doom…

But, though I haven’t published a new book, I have been working away on The Sins of Silas for all this time. Silas is the first POV character we will see from The Brotherhood of Shadow.

Writing a book from the ‘enemy’ POV has been a completely new experience for me and I have probably enjoyed writing this one the most of all the books in the series. It features a completely new set of characters and all from the point of view of the Brotherhood of Shadow, who have traditionally been the ‘bad guys’ to date.

Not only is the perspective different in this novel, but it takes place in Meraxor and its capital city, Belkeep. Belkeep has significantly different culture, terrain, customs and societal norms to the cities of the Children of Light. I have had immense fun with the world-building and have written this blog post on
Meraxor and its citizens
.

The main characters of the previous books in the series (Chaos and Soren) have been prestigious, wealthy and incredibly talented soldiers blessed with immortality and with an important role in the ongoing war.

Silas Wilder, however, is nothing like Chaos or Soren. Though he is the son of Brotherhood of Shadow leader Vincent Wilder, he is belittled, ostracized and refused an elixir of eternal youth. Though he remains bitter about this, he focuses his time and attention upon other things, mainly, the pursuit of
pleasure. He is wild, reckless, fun-loving and bordering on insanity (he has been extremely fun to write!).

My publishers, Next Chapter Publishing, have just given everything the go-ahead. The editing is complete. The layout designed. And stunning new cover art drawn up. Now, it’s just a matter of time before it can go ahead. So, here is the first glance at the new cover:

A glowing shield, featuring armies' emblems, nestled amongst twisting leaves and vines in a green design

I am utterly delighted with the way the original shield (designed by Irina French) is still incorporated into the covers – and will be for every book in the series. For more on the meaning of the shield, read this blog post. Here is the new cover alongside the others in the series:

All of the books in the Light and Shadow Chronicles together. Shield designs feature fire for A Chronicle of Chaos, feathers for The Shield of Soren, leaves and vines for The Sins of Silas, a golden necklace or genesis of Light and purple smoke for Origin of Shadow

So stay tuned for more information on the release!

Wondering what the Light and Shadow Chronicles series is about?

The world in the Light and Shadow Chronicles is in a state of eternal conflict between two nations – The Children of Light and Brotherhood of Shadow. They have been at war for thousands of years, in a stalemate that is manipulated by forces greater than any of them realise. Both armies try to shift the scales in their favour by recruiting greater forces – angels, demons, dragons, armies of the underworld, and magical beings. The war continues to grow in scale until the entire world is dragged into the conflict and it can only end in a cataclysmic Armageddon.

Each of the stories in the series focuses on a significant character or group and their role within the battle. Every story is laying the foundations for something else, like building blocks for the epic finale. The books are written out of order – one story may feature a character in his adulthood, the next is set before he is born, the next after his death. Putting the order of events together is up to you.

This means that you may choose your own journey through the saga. If you feel connected to a certain character, you can follow that individual’s story first. And if you join the series after book 5 is released, there is no need to read books one through four first!

So where does the new book fit into the series?

Genesis of Light is a fantasy novella set towards the beginning of the timeline, which tells the origin story of the Children of Light. Another novella will be released later this year to explain the origin story of the Brotherhood of Shadow. This novella is entitled Origin of Shadow and is currently in editing.

It’s here – the new cover for Genesis of Light!

Cover Reveal for Genesis of Light by D.M. Cain

I’m so excited to share with you the cover for my upcoming release, Genesis of Light! This novella is part of my epic, immersive fantasy series The Light and Shadow Chronicles. The series is centered upon a centuries-long war between two armies. Each book focuses upon a character within the timeline. This novella gives the origin story of one of the armies – The Children of Light. A complementary novella entitled Origin of Shadow will be released towards the end of 2018.

There is no official release date for the book yet but I am hoping it will be towards the end of July 2018. In the meantime, if you haven’t read the others in the series yet you can get them here (though reading these first isn’t required to understand Genesis of Light):

Genesis of Light BLURB

Warring countries, fantastical creatures, beings of terrible power and journeys of epic scale. The legendary Book of Alcherys tells wild and unimaginable stories. But they are not mere fairy tales. They are true, every word.

Callista Nienna is strong and independent, but nothing could have prepared her for civilisation being brought to a violent end. Now, she is forced to stay alive in a desolate wilderness with only her closest friend for support.

She has two choices: give up and die with the wilting world around her or seize her destiny and make it to the only sanctuary left unscathed. At the end of her journey, something awaits Callista, something both terrifying and unbelievable.

Genesis of Light EXCERPT

Everything happened in an instant. The sky tore open with a deafening crack and the ground beneath their feet shuddered. A deep boom and then fireballs were shooting through the air and plummeting down to the city. Callista gasped and jumped to her feet. Even from this distance, she swore she could hear the screams of terrified people as the city was obliterated. Buildings were flattened, reduced to smouldering rubble within seconds. It was as if the gods themselves were hurling rocks from the sky, decimating everywhere and everyone she loved. Tears welled in her eyes, her mouth wide with horror.

Between the crumbling buildings and blazing infernos, Callista caught a glimpse of something impossible and unimaginable. She shook her head but when she looked back again it was still there. An enormous creature of towering height, unlike anything she had ever seen before. Engulfed with dripping lava and leaving wafts of sulphuric smoke in its wake, it skulked through the burning city. It swiped indiscriminately with gigantic burning fists, smashing aside buildings and trees, and crushing the bones of any living thing in its path.

Slowly, as if recognising Callista’s presence, it turned to look at her. Sizzling eyes of such intense evil focused upon her petrified form. It held her gaze for a moment, then turned away. As quickly as it had emerged, it disappeared behind the remaining buildings and out of sight.

How was The Phoenix Project inspired by D.M. Cain’s love of geek culture?

How was The Phoenix Project inspired by my love of games, film and books?

Science fiction, fantasy and general geek culture have always been a huge part of my life. Growing up it was Star Wars, Marvel, anime, and a fixation with the Final Fantasy game series. As an adult, I am working my way through the great sci-fi and dystopian films and books of our time. Also, I am discovering an immense love of all things fantasy (especially those which include immersive world-building such as Game of Thrones).

When my debut novel, The Phoenix Project, was released I decided to delve into the themes and ideas within the book to see which of these geek culture influences made their mark upon my writing.
